What to Expect During Your First Obstetric Scan

Your first obstetric scan, usually done between weeks 6 and 10, is called a dating scan. It confirms how many weeks pregnant you are, checks for a heartbeat, and confirms whether you're expecting one baby or more.

For very early scans, arriving with a full bladder can help the sonographer get a clearer view, since a full bladder pushes the uterus into a better position for imaging. Our front desk will let you know if this applies to your specific appointment.

Around weeks 18–22, an anomaly scan takes a more detailed look at your baby's organs, spine and growth — this is often when parents find out the baby's sex, if they choose to.

Every scan is reviewed by a qualified sonographer, and where anything needs a closer look, we make sure you and your referring doctor have that information the same day.
