Why Genotype Testing Matters Before Marriage

Sickle cell disease remains one of the most significant inherited health conditions in Nigeria, affecting an estimated 2–3% of births nationally. Genotype testing is a simple, one-time blood test that can prevent a lifetime of complications.

Everyone carries one of four genotypes: AA, AS, AC or SS. Two AA parents cannot have a child with sickle cell disease. Two AS (carrier) parents, however, have a 25% chance with each pregnancy of having a child with SS — sickle cell disease.

Premarital genotype screening isn't about discouraging relationships; it's about informed choice. Couples who are both AS can still choose to marry, but with a clear understanding of the risks and access to genetic counselling and family planning support.
